A report by Louise Fanfarillo for the January 2026 Ru3a Newsletter...

The book group are currently enjoying “Treacle Walker” by Alan Garner. This short and somewhat mystifying novel was shortlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize and a Guardian Best Fiction Book of 2021.

It tells the story of an introspective young boy, Joseph Coppock who lives alone in an old house, reads comics, collects birds’ eggs and plays with his marbles. One day, a rag-and-bone man called Treacle Walker appears, exchanging an empty jar of a cure-all medicine and a donkey stone for a pair of Joseph's pyjamas and a lamb's shoulder blade. A mysterious friendship develops between them.

Other books we have read this year include,

  • A book about forbidden love during the Troubles in Northern Ireland
  • Trespasses by Louise Kennedy (the TV adaptation of which is currently being shown on Channel 4
  • Exiles by Jane Harper, the story of the disappearance of a young Mother set in South Australia
  • Golden Child by Claire Adam where a father has to make an impossible choice between his twin sons Paul and Peter.

The group is currently over-subscribed and for some time we have had a waiting list. We therefore hope to set up a second reading group in the New Year. If you are interested please contact Anne Eldridge, Groups co-ordinator, or sign the EOI at our next monthly meeting.
