On Friday 6 June, The Science and Technology Group visited Glenair UK in Mansfield.
Glenair Inc. was founded in 1956, in Glendale, California on Air Way, hence the name Glenair. It is a privately owned company and whilst the head office continues to be located on Air Way, in Glendale, there are subsidiary manufacturing companies in the UK, Italy and Germany…
- Glenair UK, on Oakham Business Park in Mansfield
- Glenair Italia in Bologna
- Glenair Germany in Bad Homburg
The business operates in the following sectors…
- Military and civil aerospace
- Land systems
- Sub-sea oil and gas
- Space
- Mass transit
- Nuclear

In all the above sectors the Glenair family provide interconnect solutions and connector assemblies for power and signal connectivity within electronic components. A more expansive coverage of what the business is involved in can be found on the Glenair website.
Three representatives from the company kindly showed us around Phase 7, which is a 120,000 sq. foot facility, housing the manufacturing of parts and the testing laboratories.

Testing facilities covered numerous aspects of the manufacturing process, including vibration and shock testing, outgassing, where materials can release gases when exposed to increased temperatures (think of the smell of a new car), the degradation of signal transmission through fibre optic cables and saltwater spray, testing the quality of plating on metal parts.
In the expansive manufacturing area, the group witnessed the production of bespoke (80%) and catalogue (20%) parts designated for harnesses and wiring looms.

It was a very enjoyable and informative morning. We were made to feel most welcome and Tony Wardell extended his sincere thanks to Glenair for accommodating us.
