Our March meeting began with a discussion on the trip out in May. A decision was finally made to go to Brodsworth Hall. Details can be found on the website here:
Visit Brodsworth Hall and Gardens | English Heritage
We will arrange car sharing at our next meeting for those going, or you can meet us there if you want to go yourselves. Tickets can be bought online beforehand (a bit cheaper than on the door), unless you are English Heritage members, in which case it is free. We will sort out details at our April meeting.
Photos Sent In. Theme: MINIMALISM
This theme was a first for our group. The previous meeting had explained the concept of minimalism to members and had shown many examples and help pages to assist us. Taking photos on this theme was challenging, especially due to the poor weather conditions. However, there was a good variety of shots to view with ‘minimalistic’ content and design, so well done to all who had a go or delved into their archives to find suitable shots.
As usual, these were all interesting and discussed at length. Members were shown some aspects of composition that could be useful to develop in their photography. A free photography course that has been used by this group on occasions can be viewed on YouTube here:
Learn Photography – Simple, Practical – Free Photography Course 1/10
This course offers some very good advice and reminds us of the basics and terminology used. If you are a phone user, ignore the equipment used and concentrate on the ideas and concepts demonstrated.
Like all the themes we have tackled, this one, Minimalism, can be added to your list to be drawn on when out and about taking your own photographs!
I'll put a selection of photos on the website as usual.
My Choice / (Shots of the Month)
MY CHOICE is the new title of this section of the meeting. We still accept ‘shots of the month’ to view but also include photos from your archive that you want to show us.
Andy Townsend was the first to bring along a USB drive with three photographs that he was pleased with. One of these was a photograph taken some time ago: a seascape including boats sunken in the sand, which had good composition and lovely colouring. Have a think about this section for next time.
Next Month’s Theme: Architecture
This theme was covered just a year ago, but as it was popular, we decided to repeat it! We started with a short video which gave us insight into architectural photography and can be seen again here:
Architectural Photography: Stay Focused with Doug McKinlay – YouTube
With time running out, we had a quick review of the slideshow from last year. This contains many tips and ideas to base your photography on this month, along with links to other websites for help. It is attached to this message.
We concluded by watching just the start of a video seen last year. It is well worth watching again, as it focuses on giving tips, particularly on composition for this subject, and only uses a phone camera. The link is here:

With that, the meeting closed on time – just!
Judith and I look forward to seeing you all next time on Wednesday 1st April at 1.30 pm, so no April Fool jokes please!!!
