After our August break, the Photography for Fun group made a lively return in September. We began by sharing photographs taken for our recent theme, Compositional Techniques. In previous meetings we had explored different ways to compose an image, and members were invited to take three photographs using different techniques where possible.
There was plenty to enjoy and discuss as we looked at the results. Members spotted techniques such as the rule of thirds, leading lines, symmetry and more. In many cases, a single photograph included several techniques, which led to an interesting conversation about how composition can strengthen an image and guide the viewer’s eye.

Judith then led our regular feature, “Every Picture Tells a Story”. She showed a photograph of a double portrait of Christopher Anstey the poet and his daughter Mary Ann, painted by William Hoare around 1776, which she had taken at the National Portrait Gallery in London. She shared some of its background, and invited the group to look closely at what could be discovered from the image itself.
Our usual “My Choice” section followed, with members showing and describing recent images they had taken. Some even linked back to the compositional techniques theme. A few examples are shown below. Click on the images to see them full size.
Looking ahead, the group has decided to visit Newstead Abbey in October, with Penny kindly volunteering to coordinate the day. It will be a chance for members to meet, explore the grounds, take photographs and socialise over a coffee and cake!
We ended the meeting by introducing our next theme for November: “One Subject – Three Photos”. A short presentation helped explain the idea, and we are looking forward to seeing how members interpret the challenge.
If you are new to the group, Photography for Fun is a friendly place to share pictures, pick up ideas, and enjoy photography with others. You do not need to be an expert or have expensive equipment—just bring your interest and curiosity.
When and where we meet: Ravenshead Village Hall Brammer Room 1.30pm most 1st Wednesdays of the month. Next meeting: November 4th
