Review PFF March 2024
Felley Priory
We started our March meeting, which was well attended, by confirming the arrangements for our visit to Felley Priory next month. We will meet at 12.30pm, Wednesday 3rd April, in the Village Hall car park for car sharing and anticipate we should arrive around 1.00pm. (The exception for this is if you need to travel there yourself in order to get back a bit early.) Maureen has already indicated that she will do this, but if there is anyone else let us know so that we aren’t waiting for you. Also, if you cannot attend at all please let me know by email so that I don’t forget! The cost of entry is £6.50 for Seniors unless you are members of the RHS.
This will be an opportunity for members to share tips and advice on camera technique as well as take photos on whatever theme you like, some of which may be coming up next. Here are the revised themes until the summer:
April 2024 Visit to Felley Priory
May 2024 Macro Magic
June 2024 Sports
July 2024 Seasons
August NO MEETING
I’m not sure that gardening counts as a sport (!), but you may have opportunities for Close up / Macro and Seasons, but also look for other possibles on a wide variety of themes too. It will give you plenty of opportunity to try out various modes and settings on whatever you are using, so experiment and seek advice from others where needed. I’ll be looking for some ‘people’ photos too both posed and candid so don’t ignore each other! Short video extracts would also be welcome which can then be used in a short video presentation. Once you have processed your photos from Felley, send them to me as soon as possible so I can collate them to produce a slideshow. If you have quite a few, that is fine, as I will select the ones I need. Sending them by email might, therefore be difficult so a better method is by using a free online transfer called We Transfer. Check it here: WeTransfer - Send Large Files & Share Photos Online - Up to 2GB Free You don’t need to sign in or make an account for the free version. Just add your email address and the one you are sending to (tjmoore36@hotmail.com) and upload all your files. They will be sent directly to me.
These photos were taken by members and shown at our March meeting in 2024,
Photos sent in. Theme: Patterns
We had a large number of entries for the main theme this month. It was a good one that most members could contribute to. We enjoyed looking at these and somehow got talking about safety on telegraph poles amongst other things! We considered various compositional techniques during the showing to reinforce some of the ideas which make a picture look better! (A straight horizon amongst others!) The viewing of these took some time so we reminded ourselves that we should try and select only our best 3 photos on the theme of the month. Shots of the month can be up to three as well but preferably not on the same theme. Surprise us!
Shots of the month:
Only a couple of these. An interesting early morning shot of woodland workers by Maureen and another excellent bird shot from Heather entitled Jackdaw with Berry which was surprisingly detailed considering it had been taken through a window.
EPTaS/ 10 minute talk
No one had come forward this month for this slot so we watched a video which summarised the development of the camera from the beginning with Camera Obscura and finishing with modern day cameras. The video link is here: History of Camera | Evolution of Camera | World's First Camera Obscura (youtube.com)
NEXT MONTHS THEME: (this is for the meeting in May) Close up / Macro photography
I have attached the powerpoint file with lots of information and ideas of potential photographs you could have a go at. Included in it was a video which you can see here: MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY FOR BEGINNERS ON A BUDGET - How to take amazing close up macro photos. (youtube.com) This included the use of extension rings but the general advice was good and worth another look!

I gave three handouts also, we have spares if you didn’t get one, but I have also attached these to the email too.
Judith and I look forward to seeing you next month for the ‘photoshoot’ at Felley. Remember to charge your equipment batteries before you set off.
