PFF Meeting Review June 2024

Review PFF MEETING 05/06/24 THEME: SPORTS

Judith commented that a few people were missing due to holidays, but we had a good number there and the meeting commenced.

Photos sent in:   SPORTS THEME

The subject was made more difficult as we hadn’t identified sporting events that were happening during the year, and where we may have been able to attend either as a group or as individuals. Please let us know of any special event that might be suitable for members to attend as these do create photo opportunities that can then be useful for fitting in to a particular theme.

However, several members had sent in photos with their own interpretation of the theme and some had delved into their archive of photographs to find suitable Sports photos. Thanks, for trying to complete the task.

10  minute talk. HEATHER

Heather showed us a compilation of photographs that she had taken on a trip to the Slimbrdge Wetland Centre and  the Scott House Museum. She featured some very good and interesting shots of wildlife which were sometimes  needed to be taken through glass! Thanks Heather for telling us about this and the photos themselves.

Shots of the Month

There were quite a few photographs submitted in this category including scenic photos from Terry and Judith’s cruise around the UK and west coast of Ireland, as well as a  couple from Andy taken at a horse and carriage event, and two from Charles on his visit to the Shard. Others too which were all appreciated!

Every Picture Tells a Story (EPTAS)

Judith showed us a photo of the Ullapool Clock which she had taken on her cruise. It had quite a history being moved and updated over the years, but it was classed as the most photographed clock in Scotland! One of the reasons for this is Pareidolia. If you recall we mentioned this in a previous meeting. The clock when photographed from the correct angle appears to have human qualities, a head with a crown, two large eyes and two arms! Keep on the lookout for more examples!

Next Month’s theme : Seasons

We discussed the theme but again were reminded of the original intention of perhaps finding a particular location or subject to take photos during all four seasons. We again may have missed the opportunity to do this due to a lack of reminders throughout the year! We looked at some examples of this which had been made into a collage. I then demonstrated how to do this on Affinity Photo (currently half price at £33.99!) using 4 pictures of mine leaving Dover on my cruise! You can use most editors to do this (including Paintshop Pro - also currently on offer!) There are also some online editors like CANVA that will produce something for you automatically and most phones have apps that might do the same sort of thing.

We decided that, to complete the task for next month, we would all select from our archives, or take 4 photographs, one for each season OR any combination. These can be sent separately, or combined into a creative collage, or send all versions! Please RENAME your files before sending like this: (NOT img_1234!)

FIRST NAME or INITIALS
NUMBER (if you want them displayed in a particular order)
SEASON
TITLE (if different from Season) Like this below:

TM_01_WINTER_A Snowy Day
or just
TM_ 02_Seasons Collage

This will also make the sorting / processing better for me! Thanks

THEMES for next term:

We spent what time was left looking at examples of themes we might try for next year. (I’m still on the school year!). Good ones to have a look at both for the theme itself and examples are:
u3a - u3a Eye
We set the theme, you take the pictures - BBC News

Both of these encourage you to enter pictures on a set theme and show examples of photos that have been selected by ‘judges’ to include on the websites. Maybe some of you could think about entering these yourselves? If we can coordinate our theme with theirs that would be ideal, but it is unlikely that the timing would work. So, have a look at these past themes and select which ones you might want to tackle!

Also have a look at:
These 13 Cool Photography Themes Will Motivate Your Work (expertphotography.com) and if that isn’t enough to select from here are 328 more!
328 Photography Themes: A List Of Themes To Photograph | Icon Photography School (photographyicon.com)

Some ideas were suggested at the meeting. These included macro / close up; people and portraits; humour; transport; words and texts; framed; and liquids. Obviously, we only need a maximum of ten themes for next year, so if you have a theme that you would like to tackle, let us know. We may have to select from a long list!
We will then plan which ones to include and a timetable to suit. We will need to decide if we are going to slot in another visit on a meeting day or at another time and a potential venue.

Judith and I hope to see you all at our next meeting on Wednesday July  3rd 2024   1.30 pm Brammer Room (viewing your SEASONS  photos)
