PFF Meeting February 2026: Miniature photography

Mick. Fire Fire!

This month’s meeting welcomed two potential members to the group, Mike and Julie. We hope to see them again next month. We had an interesting meeting with lots of discussion and laughter, not always photography related! The decision about a May outing was postponed until next month. Suggested destinations include easy-to-reach places like Newstead, Rufford, and nearby National Trust sites, as well as locations farther away such as Brodsworth Hall, Yorkshire Wildlife Park, and Yorkshire Sculpture Park.  The June meeting theme is “A Day Out” which can include photos taken on this visit or any other one you take on a separate occasion.

Photos sent in: Miniature / Lego theme

Members seemed to have enjoyed this theme and spent time producing some good photographs using mini figures and setting up a variety of scenes to place them in. Diana made effective use of a light box for her gardening photos, making extra items herself to favourable effect and Andy B showed how he had created correct lighting by creating a shadow underneath his car crash photos. Andy Townsend took a different approach with one of his photos making a mini figure and a model car look life like with a background of houses in the distance. Lots of others not mentioned but have a look at the website to see a selection of them. (SOON)

Shots of the Month

We saw a variety of photographs taken in a wide variety of places, ranging from Prague and Cornwall to Edwinstowe and Ravenshead! One, by Charles, caused much discussion as he had put it in his “mildly interesting” folder. We had a good laugh about this! However, this also made us reconsider the title of this section, so we decided to change it to include any non-themed photograph, taken at any time, that you would like to bring, show, and share with us.  It might be just one photograph that you are particularly proud of but would like us to see and hear about, taken whenever, as a sort of “My Best Photo”! So, we are going to call this section “My Choice”.

You can bring up to three to show us, but instead of sending them to me, bring them along on a USB drive on the day. We will fit in what we can, and if we do not have time, we will look at those we missed the next month. They can still be shots that you have taken in the month of course! We will try that next month!

Discussion

We went on to discuss the organisation of the group. Most people were happy with keeping the Theme of the month, so we will. But as always, we need your input with what goes into the programme! Remember that an opportunity to have a longer slot in the meeting yourself is available with any photography related  “10 minute talk”, Also the “Every Picture Tells a Story” section if you have one, be it your own photograph or one that has been taken at any time by another photographer. Find out about one for next time!

Let me know before the meeting if you can contribute to the session in any way or if you have other ideas.

NEXT MONTH’S THEME March:  Minimalist Photography

We started this section with a video, which explained the concept of Minimalist photography. I won’t discuss the details here, but the main points are also included in the presentation, which you can find attached to the email and available on the website.  I will put these and other links below. However, the key points were:

·       Negative space. Minimalist photos tend to feature lots of empty, or negative, space.

·       A small main subject. Minimalist compositions keep the subject small in the frame so that they are dwarfed by negative space.

·       Limited clutter. Minimalism emphasizes simplicity, and minimalist photos tend to feature a main subject, lots of empty space, and nothing else.

Keep these in mind when taking photos this month. It will be interesting to see what you produce!
