PFF Meeting December 2025 "One Dominant Colour"

Iceberg Ahead

Review PFF MEETING December 2025 THEME:  “One Dominant Colour”

A lively meeting again with a good turnout. We welcomed Mick back after being off a while and Penny returned for a second time.

Photos sent in:  Theme : One Dominant Colour

The Theme for the month had been “One Dominant Colour”, and it was good to see that group members had grasped the concept and had tried to take new images, or find back copies, of images that fitted the theme. We had a good session looking at these and discussed some of the difficulties involved and the techniques used.

It is another compositional aspect that we should keep in mind when taking photographs. Images with similar colours can be quite effective, if they can be found or created. Terry mentioned the use of a photo editors which can be found for free on windows and Apple computers as well as on phones. These enabled the image to be further modified, particularly in this theme to enhance the colour. The changing of White Balance and the use of filters could do this, and we shouldn’t be worried about altering an image using these and other enhancements if it makes the result better (in your opinion!).

I’ll put a few of these on the website later.

Every Picture Tells A Story

Terry showed the  “Ghost Town Visitor” – The Brown Hyena of Kolmanskop to view. It was the winner of the 2025 Wildlife Photographer of the Year award.” Information was given about the Hyena itself and the setting it was shot in; a deserted Mining town in Namibia. Other details followed about the  about the photographer Wim van den Heever who spent 10 years trying to get the shot! Here is a short video (which we didn’t see!) about the taking of the picture . Have a look here:

Can you take part in this section of the meeting by contributing a short talk about one photograph. It can be your own, or by someone else. Have a think about this for  2026!

Shots of The Month

Some of these were a continuation of the theme and others not! No matter, it was interesting stuff. One was an image created by AI to fit the theme which in itself was very good, However, we discussed briefly how this could impact photographers and content creators in the future. From a group photography point of view we accept that Image Editors can be used to improve a photograph, but not that AI should be used to create an image.

NEXT MONTHS  (January)  THEME:  Close Up Curiosity

We went on to discuss the title and come up with ideas of what it could mean. The presentation then looked at these in detail: Check the presentation for ideas. The second part of the presentation is one we looked at in 2022 on Macro photography. To summarise you have three options for next months theme as indicated below:

1.      Take two photos of the same subject. The first can be close up and perhaps at an unusual angle and the second can be wide out to see the subject as we would normally see it. This would be part of a quiz where we have to guess what it is. (A bit like the video that we saw afterwards. (I can’t find that one again so here is one that is similar to it:

Everyday Objects In Macro - YouTube  Have a look!)

If you are doing any of these please send me the photos in Pairs (closeup / wide)

2.      Present 2 images as a Diptych (Place the close-up and wide shot side by side using a photo editor such as Affinity Photo) if you do this, send three images to me. They will have 2 photos side by side on each image

3.      If you prefer, you can concentrate on just 3 images that are very close up. Macro images as explained on the presentation. Send me just the 3 images. These sort of images tend not to be confusing, they are larger than life images of things that are very small but recognisable. Insects and bugs often feature but also man made items.

4.      You can combine any of the three ideas in your submissions.   Say one Quiz pair, one Diptych pair, one Macro etc!

There is plenty of information on Macro or Close up photography on the internet to find. I’ve also sent the pdf version of the Presentation we saw which has some links.

Have a great Christmas everyone, and a Happy New Year also! See you all in 2026 (7th January!)
