On 15 September, the Arts Appreciation Group looked at the development and the successes of the ‘Arts and Crafts Movement’ which started in Great Britain in the late 19th century, inspired by the vision of the Pre-Raphaelites.
The driving force behind the movement was William Morris, who wanted to change the value which society placed on how things were made. ‘Arts and Crafts’ was a reaction to the damaging effects of industrialisation.
The movement developed from an increased understanding that society needed to adopt different approaches in the manufacture of objects. It aspired to create artistic products by skilled craftsmen, who lived and worked in good social conditions.
We all agreed with this quote from William Morris:
“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

The group watched two videos about the movement before discussing how ‘Arts and Crafts’ had changed design and manufacturing.
Our attention then moved to ‘Arts and Crafts’ houses that were open to visitors. Examples of National Trust properties were shared and members gave their personal views on visiting the locations. In addition, Jill and Sue shared their impressions of Blackwell House in the Lake
District.
