The Local History group visited the Mansfield Fire Museum in September 2024.
We were first shown a modern fire engine by one of the crew, who explained how it all worked and the equipment involved. Then we were taken to the museum itself, which is housed in the original building on the site.
The volunteers explained many of the displays, including the last one of its kind, a 1950s Leyland fire engine, which was rescued by one of the volunteers’ husbands and refurbished over many years.
After a cup of tea and a biscuit, they also showed us several other exhibits and explained the history of the fire service. It was an interesting and enjoyable visit for the group.
