On 19 May 2025, John Bewick treated the group to an excellent presentation on the life and talent of the Lake District guidebook author, Alfred Wainwright.

Members learnt so much, not just about the man, but also about his meticulous attention to detail when sketching and handwriting the pages of his books.

John has been an active member of the Wainwright Society since its conception in 2002, and his enthusiasm for the guidebooks and fellwalking were infectious.

If you would like to learn more about the invaluable work of the society, please visit the website.

Two Arts Appreciation members had information to share with the group:

  • Vicky had visited the only known reproduction of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the world. She recommended that anyone visiting the Brighton area should include a visit to the English Martyrs Catholic Church.
  • Margaret mentioned that Laura Knight’s war paintings, including Ruby Loftus, had featured in a programme available on BBC I-player entitled ‘A Culture Show Special: The Art of World War II’ – it’s well worth a watch!

The next group meeting will be on Monday 16 June when we shall be starting to look at the work of the Impressionists. In preparation, members were asked to contact Sharan Jones if they would be willing to spend 5 minutes telling the group about one of their favourite impressionist paintings.
