5 day( 4 night) holiday in Pembrokeshire in April 2026, leaving Nottinghamshire on 25th April and staying at the Cliffe Norton Hotel, Tenby.
Sue Robb has kindly provided a report and photo of this holiday.
A panoramic view of the harbour and colourful buildings, set against the background of blue sky and sea like a millpond, was the view that greeted us from the hotel. Not the Mediterranean but Tenby in April.
There was a lot to explore in the town and members of the group made the most of their free day. Activities included long walks on beautiful sandy beaches, boat trips to and around Caldey Island, walking around the headland and seeing the view from Prince Albert’s statue, exploring the impressive town walls, and seeking out the best cafes and bars where you could sit outside and enjoy the warm sun.
There were two days when trips out were arranged. On a visit to St David’s we discovered the Bishops Palace, next to the cathedral, complete with a narrow spiral staircase from the top of which was a panoramic view of the whole site. We were able to enter the cathedral following the Sunday service but the wait was worth it. I especially liked the carved and painted wooden ceilings.
The visit to sleepy Haverfordwest on a Sunday afternoon was less successful for most people. The castle was closed for preservation works but we followed the river and found the ruins of an Augustinian Priory with its own pleasure gardens hidden away and not well signposted.
On the last full day the millpond sea disappeared as a cold wind hit the coast. A short visit to Carmarthen was followed by a stop in Saundersfoot. This is an interesting coastal village with an industrial history of mining but now geared up for tourists. We followed the old mining railway track along the coast and through tunnels to the next bay and climbed back over the headland through a bluebell wood and back along the pristine beach. This effort was rewarded by eating dressed crab on a picnic table, partly sheltered from the wind.
Each day we all returned to our hotel for a good meal served by friendly efficient staff and were able to socialise in the lounge.
The driver was excellent and Halinka’s organisation, as ever, meticulous. Thank you all for a lovely time.
